Summary

Summary

         The Search for WondLa is a fantasy book that takes place on a planet known to the inhabitants as Orbana. This planet used to be earth, however earth was destroyed and an alien race brought a device that created life on the lifeless planet. However, the life the aliens created was not human life. There were weird plants and animals such as walking trees and creatures with mouths on their foreheads. Eva Nine was raised in the sanctuary by a robot named Muthr, however she believes that there are other humans and a desire grows in her to find them. She grew up being prepared to go out onto earth, but when a fire starts in the sanctuary she is forced to leave Muthr and go out on to the surface before her training is complete. When she reaches the surface she finds that all the simulations and lessons Muthr taught to ready her for the outside world, are useless.

         The planet is nothing at all like it was made out to be. She runs to the shelter of the forest, but is pursued by a large creature emerging from the sanctuary opening. When it spots her it trys to shoot her and kill her. She gets away and finds a creature called Rovender who starts yelling at her in another language. Eva uses her Omni-pod (a device that can pretty much do anything) to translate his language so that she can communicate with him. They both get captured by the monster Besteel who, it turns out, is the one who set Eva's sanctuary on fire. They are taken to Besteel's hunting camp and hung with other animals ready to be slaughtered. Rovender and Eva help each other escape and quickly become friends. They also manage to help a large water bear called Otto escape. He soon becomes their friend as well because Eva can speak to him through her thoughts. Otto, Rovender and Eva travel back to the sanctuary to reboot Muthr and convince her to leave with them. As they are leaving Eva goes to her secret hiding place where she keeps the things that, over the years, Muthr had told her to get rid of. She finds a scrap of paper that has a picture on it and the letters that she can make out spell WondLa. It is the only thing in her special place that was not given to her by Muthr. Rovender says that they want to get to a city called Solas because there could be humans there. They go to Lacus to catch a ferry to Solas and they stay the night with some of Rovender's friends. In the morning Eva sneaks out alone to explore the city and gets caught by a soothsayer named Arius who leaves a mark on her hand. Then when she is returning Besteel comes and captures her and takes her to a museum to be killed and put on display. She makes a friend who is a brother of arius and he lets her escape. She sees a display with her type of shoes and sneakboots in them and figures out that they where dug up in some runes out in the desert. They travel to the runes and Besteel meets them there. In the mean time Eva and Rovender take shelter from Besteel in the ruins of the New York library. she finds a book with a copy of the picture from her WondLa. It was the cover of the book The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. when Otto lets her know that Besteel found him and Muthr she gets out of the library and Besteel almost kills her but Muthr jumps in front and gets killed herself. At the very end an airship comes and a human boy gets off, the last line of the book is "I am here to take you home". The story is continued in the second and third books.
